2019 Summer Supporter Trip: July 16 - 20

The Samburu Project has partnered with Travel Affairs in Nairobi to design a once in a lifetime travel adventure that includes spending time with The Samburu Project in the heart of the Northern Frontier of Kenya. TSP’s, Project Manager, Eric Lekolii (former safari guide and Samburu naturalist) and the TSP team will provide unparalleled access to Samburu community and the wildlife with whom they live. Our guests will visit well communities, local schools, health clinics and agricultural projects with intermittent game drives through the magnificent Samburu National Reserve. If you've ever dreamed of going to Africa, if you want to spend time with indigenous people who live according to tribal customs hundreds of years old, if you want to see elephants, leopards and giraffes in their beautiful natural habitat, TSP is waiting to host you in Samburu. 

Additional travel before or after your days in Samburu can be spent in Masai Mara, Mt. Kenya, Amboseli or the beautiful coast on the Indian Ocean. All travel can be customized to accommodate every budget.

Day 1: ARRIVE - Nairobi

  • Arrival to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfer to accommodation of your choosing. 

Dinner and overnight stay in Nairobi.

Day 2: Nairobi Excursion

  • Private driver will take you to visit Giraffe Center, Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Karen Blixen Museum (Out of Africa House), the Kazuri Bead Factory and other local sites or shopping destinations in Nairobi.

Overnight stay in Nairobi.

Day 3: Mount Kenya Area

  • Transfer/flight to Nanyuki (via AirKenya, Wilson Airport) - pick up by Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club arrive in time for lunch. Known for their outstanding cuisine and magnificent views of majestic Mount Kenya, Mt Kenya Safari Club is a luxuriously appointed resort set in over 100 acres of landscaped gardens.  Originally the retreat of movie star and Club founder, William Holden, the Club's illustrious former members have included Winston Churchill, John Wayne and Bing Crosby.  

  • Afternoon free for golf, a visit to the animal orphanage or time spent lost in their maze.

Day 4: Mount Kenya Area + OI Pejeta Conservancy

  • Game drive in OI Pejeta Conservancy to see tamed rhinos, chimps and other game (lunch included).

Day 5: Welcome to Samburu

  • Breakfast at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club. Flight to Kalama airstrip in Samburu County.

  • Welcome to Samburu by TSP staff. Travel to Sere Olipi to visit various well points and bush lunch. Game drive through Samburu National Reserve to check in to a tented camp or lodge of your choosing within the park.  

Dinner and overnight stay in accommodation in Samburu National Reserve.

Day 6: Day with The Samburu Project    

  • Visitors will spend a full day with TSP’s team on the ground in Samburu, where Project Manager, Eric Lekolii (former bronze level safari guide) will treat visitors to a morning game drive and unique access to Samburu villages. 

  • Bush lunch at a well community will be arranged by TSP during which time you will be serenaded with traditional songs of thanks and tribal dancing and invited into the community manyatta and access to take photographs.

  • Game drives through the Samburu National Park will provide up-close and personal experiences viewing the Samburu Special Five: Reticulated Giraffe, Oryx, Gerenuk, Ostrich and the endangered Grevys Zebra. In addition, you may see Lions, Elephants, Dik-Dik and some of the most beautiful birds on the African continent. 

  • Visit to Save The Elephants HQ and outdoor museum.

Breakfast, dinner and overnight stay at accommodation in Samburu National Reserve  

[Additional Days can be spent in Samburu where visitors can indulge in a number of once-in-a lifetime experiences such as camel trekking into the Northern Frontier with local Samburu herdsmen and climbing of Mount Ololokwe along elephant migratory paths or summit the top by helicopter where a lunch atop the mountain awaits along with a breath-taking view of Matthew's Range and the Laikipia Plateau. ]

Day 7: Morning in Samburu / travel to Masai Mara Game Reserve

  • Check out and early morning game drive to Archer's Post where visitors can visit the weekly livestock market.

  • Transfer to Kalama airstrip for AirKenya flight to Masai Mara.  

  • Arrival at Masai Mara airstrip, pick up/transfer to one of several camps operated by Governors'Camps. 

Lunch, dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp (included are house wines, beers, soft drinks and laundry).

Day 8: Masai Mara Game Reserve

  • Morning and afternoon game drives.  Hot air balloon safari and bush breakfast are available

Meals and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.

Day 9: Lamu

  • Early morning game drive followed by breakfast at Camp.  

  • Transfer to airstrip for flight to Nairobi (Wilson Airport).  Connection to Air Kenya for flight to Lamu with boat transfer to iconic Peponi Hotel in Shela Village on Lamu Island.

Day 10 + 11: Lamu

  • Leisure days in Lamu.  

  • Available activities include; massages, personal grooming services, sundowner dhow cruises, bush dinners, windsurfing, snorkeling, sailing, private tours to Unesco Lamu town or other historic Swahili sites.  

Dinner and overnight at Peponi Hotel.

Day 12: DEPART

  • Breakfast at hotel.  Mid-morning at leisure.  

  • Boat transfer to Lamu airstrip for Air Kenya flight to Nairobi (Wilson Airport).  

  • Most international flights depart in evening, half day rooms can be arranged for rest and refreshment prior to travel
